Northern Myanmar
Kachin State is a mountainous region occupied by approximately 14
different ethic groups, the Jinghpaws or kachins, begins the dominant
one. Their religion is mostly animistic and the formation of the clans
heredity, with the youngest son inheriting the father's position and
wealth.
The largest town in Kachin state is Myinkyina. The nearest town is Putao,
once known as Fort Hertz, military outpost. You can explore subtropical
evergreen and rainforests as well as the villages with the tribes namely
Khanti Shan, Lisu and Rawang who still uphold the traditional way of
life of their ancestors. Putao stands with the snowny mountains around
it.
The Lisu and the Rawang belong to the Kachin race, although they have
vastly differesnt costumes and customs. The Lisu girls around Putao wear
long gathered skirts in pale blue stripes panelled with white, and
long-sleeved white or blue blue blouses under a short sleeved caot of
black. Over one shoulder and across the front they wear a string of
beads decorated with seashells grinded on river stones into smooth
discs. Lisu boys wear a simple loose jacket over dark trousers, belted
with a wide, embroidered cloth. The only flamboyant touch of colour in
their turbans. The men are pround of tjeir swords or crossbows, marks of
their prowess as hunters.
The Rawang men, especially the chieftains, wear woven hats of cane,
flaring upwards. The front and sides of the hats are adorned with tusks
of the wild boar. They wear thick coats of turfed cotton in colourful
patterns. The women's longyi ( sayong ) are in thick horizontal stripes
of black, red and white. Their pointed turbans are in white cotton. The
Rawang women wear coils of black-lacquered cane around their waists.
The khamti Shan, who are a member of the extended Shan race, also live
in Putao. Their costumes is very different from that of the Shan who
live in the Shan State. Women wear white long sleeved and short waisted
jackets with plain black longyis ( sayongs ), over which they wear a
short, fringed weap, red in colour. Long strands fall at intervals from
it, reaching to the bottom edge of their longyis.
Eastern Myanmar
Kyaingtong, is one of the most scenic towns in eastern Shan state and it
can be easily reached from the Thai border crossing at Mae Sai/ Tachilek.
It is also surrounded by many villages of enthnic minorities, including
